A 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Colombia on Sunday, according to the Colombian Geological Service. The agency reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Many people across the country felt the tremor, as noted in reports to the Geological Service.
The earthquake struck 17 kilometers northeast of Paratebueno, a city located about 116 miles southeast of Colombia’s capital, Bogota, at 8:08 a.m. local time.
According to the Colombian Geological Service, several aftershocks with magnitudes between 4 and 4.6 were recorded in the same region just minutes later.
The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management announced on X that it is currently monitoring the situation in various municipalities.
Photos and videos shared on social media showed people in Bogota who felt the tremor—some even left their workplaces to stay safe. Meanwhile, footage from rural areas showed there was no reported damage.
Colombia is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for its frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
