Volkswagen pulled the plug on the electric e-Golf in 2020 to make room for the ID.3 hatchback in global markets and the ID.4 SUV for the U.S. Last year, we heard that Volkswagen was looking to bring the e-Golf back and drop the ID.3. Now, a recent report from Automotive News has shed more light on the upcoming 2029 Volkswagen Golf EV. Here’s what we know about the upcoming electric hatchback.
There isn’t a lot of information on the 2029 Volkswagen Golf EV. Speaking with Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer, Automotive News reports that an all-electric version of the Golf will come out before the car’s flagship Trinity model. The automaker has pushed back the launch date of the Trinity to come out after the Golf EV. Schäfer confirmed that the Golf EV will be revealed in 2029, and the Trinity will follow after.

The 2029 Volkswagen Golf EV will be built as part of a joint venture with Rivian and will mark the first Volkswagen to come from the brand’s partnership with the all-electric brand. “We decided on how to do the software-defined vehicle,” Schäfer told the outlet. “It will happen with Rivian, the joint venture, where we put the new electric electronics architecture together. But we have also decided that we want to start this journey with a more iconic product. So we’ll start with the Golf.”
While the 2029 Golf EV will be the first VW to be built in partnership with Rivian, it won’t be the first for the entire VW Group. The first vehicles to have the software-defined vehicle architecture from Rivian will carry Audi and Porsche badges. These vehicles are set to arrive as early as 2027 and will provide a lot of information on what’s in store for the 2029 Golf EV.
More information on the 2029 Volkswagen Golf EV should become available within the next year. Please check back for updates as they become available.
